Description

The Longwood area of eastern Brookline was originally part of Samuel Sewall’s large farming estate. The area began getting more developed when the Brookline Branch Railroad was developed. It was developed primarily with the intention of being a fashionable residential area in the 1850s by David Sears and Amos Adams Lawrence. Also by this time, David Sears had planted over fourteen thousand beech trees in the Longwood Area. This has come to be Longwood Park, and though there are not quite as many trees anymore, the green space is well treasured.

Brookline is a city 3 miles southwest of Boston, located in Norfolk county, and part of the Greater Boston area. Regarded as a commuter suburb, Brookline is well known for its great schools, distinct neighborhoods, upscale shopping, and village pubs. Brookline is easily accessible by the MBTA green line, and several bus routes. There are two major retail districts in Brookline: Washington Square and Coolidge Corner. Brookline is also home to several parks. The Larz Anderson Park in particular has an outdoor skating rink in the winter, and is popular for sledding in the snow.
